I'm not reading as much as I used to and, to that end, I ain't writing as much either. Hopefully I am both reading and writing better stuff, but who can tell?
When I was in my teens and early twenties I got through a lot of books. Granted, these days a book is still never more than a few feet away from me - and I can still be seen walking and reading a paperback at the same time; crossing busy streets, accidents be damned - but life kinda sucks your free time away, especially when you find yourself in your thirties having to juggle a Wife, a job, and lots of other things that you didn't really think about back in the darkened days of your youth.
I sometimes look at the pages I wrote then as well, and I laugh. But it isn't comedy. Was I really that naive? When I was young I obviously thought big words were good words as my prose was peppered with them, but invariably they are just pretentious alternatives. Nothing that a nice four-letter word couldn't handle.
Quality over quantity. That's what I'm hoping for anyway.
